Remote Monitoring Supports Early Discharge for Newborns Requiring Tube Feeding

Share:

A 2023 study examined the use of remote patient monitoring to allow newborns who still require nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding to be discharged home earlier from the NICU. Among 104 babies enrolled in the program, 85% successfully achieved full oral feeding, typically within 5 days of tube feeding and 15 days on monitoring. Babies gained an average of 31 grams per day while at home, and physician oversight averaged just over 9 minutes per day. Only 6 babies required an unplanned hospital readmission. The study demonstrates that with proper remote monitoring support, early discharge for babies with continued tube feeding needs can be safe and effective.
